Most visitors to Aruba never leave the resort strip. That means Arikok National Park — which covers nearly a fifth of the entire island — is surprisingly uncrowded for a place this spectacular.

Here’s everything you need to know before you go.

What is Arikok National Park?

Arikok is a protected nature reserve on the eastern and northern side of the island. The landscape is dramatically different from the calm Caribbean beach side — rocky, arid, and windswept, with dramatic cliffs on the Atlantic coast and a rugged interior full of cacti, wildlife, and history.

The Natural Pool (Conchi)

This is the main reason most people make the trip. Conchi is a natural rock pool on the island’s northern coast, formed where volcanic rock creates a natural barrier against the crashing Atlantic waves. The result is a sheltered pool of clear seawater that’s perfect for swimming — surrounded by dramatic scenery with no hotels or development in sight.

Getting there requires either a 4×4 vehicle or joining a guided ATV or UTV tour. The road is rough and unpaved. The drive is part of the experience.

The Caves

Arikok has several caves worth exploring. Fontein Cave contains ancient Arawak rock drawings — red ochre paintings left by the island’s original inhabitants centuries ago. Guadirikiri Cave has two large chambers open to the sky, creating natural skylights and a habitat for bats. Both are accessible from the main park road.

The Trails

The park has several marked hiking trails ranging from easy walks to more challenging routes across rocky terrain. The San Fuego trail takes you through the heart of the park past cacti, wild donkeys, and iguanas. Bring water, wear closed-toe shoes, and go early before the midday heat sets in.

Wildlife

Arikok is home to several species found only in Aruba, including the Aruban whiptail lizard and the shoco — a small burrowing owl that is one of the island’s national symbols. Wild donkeys roam freely throughout the park, descendants of animals brought over by early settlers. Iguanas are everywhere.

Practical information

  • Entrance fee: Around $15 USD per person
  • Opening hours: Daily from 8am to 4pm
  • Getting there: A 4×4 is recommended for reaching Conchi; a regular car is fine for the main park areas
  • Best time to go: Early morning for cooler temperatures and better wildlife spotting

A local driver with a 4×4 can take you through the park, drop you at the natural pool, and bring you back — it’s the easiest and most comfortable way to see the best of Arikok without worrying about navigating the rough roads yourself.
